There are thousands of magazine collectors through out the world and just as many different magazines. It can be difficult if you are just starting out as a magazine collector to know where to start or which magazines are considered collectible. The value of a magazine depends on what issue it is and the condition that it is in. Some of magazine collector favorites are discussed below.
National Geographic is a scientific magazine that features articles, maps and pictures of various societies and wildlife from around the world. It was first published in 1888 and became a monthly publication in 1896. This magazine is one of the most popular magazines in North America. The first issue of National Geographic can be valued at close to $10 000 and is considered one of the greatest finds by magazine collectors around the world because there are few of them still around that are in good condition. Other issues of this magazine do not bring such high prices in fact most early issues after the first four will be valued in the hundreds rather than thousands. An entire collection in good to mint condition can be considered to be worth twenty five to eighty thousand dollars ($25000 to $80000), but all issues must be in the collection and the earliest issues are the most important in the collection. A collection of the first twelve years of publication from 1888 to 1900 is valued at anywhere from fifteen to forty five thousand dollars ($15000 to $45000) if in excellent condition. Some of the individual issues that are highly sought after include the October 1909 issue focusing on the discovery of the North Pole, October 1943 which had a cover story on decorative medals and service ribbons, July 1954 on Mt Everest, June 1962 with the cover story of John Glenn orbiting the Earth and the August 1963 issue on Disneyland.
Life magazine is one of the top news magazines for collectors because of its large format and beautifully shot pictures. It began publication in 1936 and was a weekly publication up until 1972 when it became a monthly magazine which also publishes special edition issues at times. The first issue in November 1936 had a cover story on Fort Peck Dam. Some of the other key issues that are considered magazine collector favorites include the May 1939 and August 1949 issues featuring Joe Dimaggio, three issues that had Marilyn Munroe on the cover (April 1952, May 1953 and August 1962), Cassius Clay better known to the world as Muhammad Ali was on the cover in March of 1964 and the Beatles in August the same year.
Sports Illustrated has many issues that are among magazine collector favorites. Sports Illustrated was first published in August 1954 by the same man who founded other collectible favorites like Life, Time and Fortune, Henry Luce. The first years of the magazine it focussed mainly on fishing, hunting, college sports and baseball. By the 1960’s it became a more well rounded sports magazine which is now considered the place to go for sports news. Aside from the first issue, other issues that are considered gems include the June 11th 1973 issue featuring Secretariat and the April 1974 issue on Hank Aaron’s 715 homerun. The swimsuit features published every year are also revered by collectors and young men around the world.
Rolling Stone Magazine first started publication in November 1967 and has been considered the authority on the world of Rock and Roll and was the bible of the hippie culture. Some of the most wanted issues of Rolling Stone reported the deaths of music icons such as John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, Brian Jones and Tupac Shakur. No magazine collection is complete without the Rolling Stones issue on Woodstock or the cover featuring Charles Manson.
There are many magazines that collectors love above and beyond those mentioned here. Mad Magazine has it’s own breed of collectors, Time Magazine, the New Yorker, Fortune and others all have key issues that hold memories and valuable stories of moments in history.
